Estima Sclerotherapy

Spider veins can appear as red or blue clusters of veins on the skin's surface, creating a web-like pattern. While spider veins are typically harmless, they decrease confidence and cause feelings of self-consciousness. If this sounds like something you’ve experienced, Estima sclerotherapy may be for you.

 FAQs

  • Asclera (polidocanol) Injection is a prescription medication approved by the FDA for the treatment of uncomplicated spider veins and reticular veins in the lower extremities.

Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure that has been used since the 1930’s to treat varicose and spider veins. As the standard of care, it is Gold Standard therapy and is considered one of the most effective treatments for removing unwanted leg veins.

Today’s procedure involves injecting Asclera directly into your veins, to seal, shut down and fade over several weeks. The treated vein is then naturally reabsorbed by the body.

  • Asclera is administered via injection, this treatment is referred to as sclerotherapy. Once the medicine is injected into the affected vein, it causes the vein to seal shut, eventually reabsorb into the body, and fade from view over time.

  • The number of treatments differs from patient to patient, depending on the extend of spider veins present. One to six or more treatments may be needed; the average is 3-4 treatments.

  • Individual results may vary depending on varicose vein severity, disease progression, skin tone, and number of treatments. Most people treated will have good results, however, there is no guarantee that Sclerotherapy will be effective in every case.

In clinical studies, 88% of patients were satisfied or very satisfied with their Asclera treatment at 12 weeks.

  • Before the day of your procedure you can purchase medium-grade stockings (20 to 30 mmHg) to wear after the procedure to help maintain blood flow, reduce discomfort and swelling, support healing, reduce risk of deep vein thrombosis. Please note if you get Estima Sclerotherapy, a complimentary pair of compression stockings is included in your treatment.

On the day of treatment avoid shaving your legs or applying lotion. Please wear comfortable clothing that allows for access to the treatment area, otherwise a robe will be provided.

  • Each appointment typically lasts 30-60 minutes. We will start by using an antiseptic to clean the treatment area. Small needles are used to inject Asclera. A slight stinging sensation may occur during injection but will quickly subside.

  • Post care is critical to ensure success of your treatment. Wear your compression stockings 24 hours a day for 7 days. After 7 days, continue to wear them during the day for the following 2 weeks.

Ensure you are walking 20 minutes immediately after treatment. Continue walking 20 minutes per day for the first 3 days.

  • For the first 3 days after Estima Sclerotherapy avoid heavy exercise, long plane flights or car rides, sunbathing, hot tubs, baths or saunas. Avoid long periods of sitting or standing - movement is key for the success of treatment.

These side effects typically go away within a few days to several weeks. In extremely rare instances, some side effects may take months or years to resolve.

  • You shouldn’t receive Asclera if you have a known allergy to polidocanol, have an acute vein or blood clotting (thromboembolic) disease, or are pregnant or nursing. Be sure to tell your provider all the medicines you are taking, including prescription, non-prescription medicines, vitamins and herbal products.

Call your provider immediately if you experience an allergic reaction. In rare cases formation of small “burns” or ulcers form, usually due to leakage of Asclera into the skin. These will heal in time but could leave a scar. If you have lasting pain that turns into severe pain call your provider. These are rare instances but important to note.
